NSHAP is a U.S. national, longitudinal, population-based collection of respondent health and social factors with public and restricted use versions of the data files. NSHAP is funded by NIA and conducted by NORC and Principal Investigators at the University of Chicago. NACDA hosts public and restricted versions of the data.

  • The NSHAP public use files are available for direct download from the study pages (view full list of studies from the series page).
  • Use the NACDA Colectica Portal to download customized datasets; registration independent of Researcher Passport is required.
  • Users will need to apply for access for the restricted data by completing the restricted-use agreements for each study; NSHAP also requires IRB approval and a data protection plan (example protection plan can be found in the agreements). Completed use agreements with scanned original or digital signatures should be sent to icpsr-help@umich.edu.

What’s the difference between the public-use files and the restricted-use files? Visit the NSHAP study pages to download Excel comparisons/crosswalks.

Quick steps to getting NSHAP restricted data: work with a PI; get IRB approval; complete the agreement; provide a data protection plan; sign and email files to NACDA; get an encrypted link and password to download data.
